New Year New Laws
As a refresher, I wanted to once again share a link with you to information on new laws that took effect as of January 1, 2017. Please visit the IL House GOP Caucus Blog New Laws for 2017 to read more.  In all, 191 new laws took effect as of the 1st of the year.
Molly’s Law Signing Named one of the Southern Illinoisan’s 2016 Highlights
One law in particular that I wanted to highlight is Molly’s Law. The Governor signed Molly’s Law in Carbondale back in July and just this week the signing of Molly’s Law was named to The Southern Illinoisan’s list of top moments of 2016.
Governor Signs Law in Carbondale to Alleviate Teacher Shortages
Just this morning, Governor Rauner was in Carbondale to sign another law that I sponsored. SB 2912 is an initiative of the Illinois State Board of Education and other education advocacy groups.

Onerous laws governing the process to obtain a substitute teaching certificate in Illinois had resulted in a shortage of substitute teachers that has negatively impacted schools in southern Illinois.

SB 2912 makes important changes to current law. By reducing certificate fees, allowing individuals with four-year degrees to apply for substitute teacher certificates, and cutting red tape for out-of-state applicants, SB 2912 helps expand the pool of potential substitute teachers for schools statewide.

John Alongi 90th Birthday CelebrationOn New Year’s Eve, I was privileged to present John Alongi with a congratulatory House Resolution marking the occasion of his 90th birthday. Alongi’s in DuQuoin is the oldest Italian Restaurant in southern Illinois. John is a veteran of the Korean War and has spent his life raising his family in southern Illinois and building Alongi’s into a southern Illinois institution. Happy 90th Birthday John!
